Denver Public Schools (DPS) acknowledged that personally identifiable information (PII) of both current and former staff members and students were compromised during a data breach that occurred at the end of last year.

In a press release, DPS said on Jan. 4, 2023, it discovered that PII, including names and Social Security numbers of current and former participants in DPS’s employer-sponsored health plan; employee fingerprints; bank account numbers or pay card numbers; student identification numbers; driver’s license numbers; passport numbers; and limited health plan enrollment information maintained for human resources purposes were all compromised during a data breach.

DPS said that between Dec. 13, 2022 and Jan. 13, 2023, an unauthorized actor accessed and/or took certain files stored on DPS computer servers.

DPS issued a notice on March 3 alerting staff and students about the data breach. Additionally, in that notice, DPS said it was mailing letters to affected individuals and offering free credit monitoring and identity theft protection services to affected individuals.

“To help prevent a similar incident from occurring in the future, we have implemented additional measures to enhance the security of our network and continue to provide data security training to our employees,” DPS said.
