The California Department of Justice (DoJ) has released its independent investigation of the exposure of confidential personal data associated with the update of DoJ’s 2022 Firearms Dashboard. The state agency agreed to implement a list of recommendations to improve data security going forward, including hiring a chief information security officer.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan has joined South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem in banning the popular social media app TikTok. In an emergency directive, Gov. Hogan banned TikTok, as well as other “Chinese and Russian-influenced products and platforms,” from use by the executive branch of state government.

More than 5,000 incarcerated patients of the Sacramento County (Calif.) Correctional Health organization have had their private medical data exposed on the internet for months due to a contractor data breach, according to Sacramento County Health Services.

New research from Lookout finds that mobile threats affecting Federal, state, and local governments are on the rise. Lookout, a provider of endpoint-to-cloud security, said that mobile phishing and device vulnerability risks within government agencies has increased since 2021.

Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards and the Director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) Jen Easterly, on Nov. 7, announced that CYBER.ORG Range – a no-cost, safe, virtual environment for K-12 students to learn cybersecurity skills – will be expanded to students nationwide.

As cyberattacks against state and local governments rise, the state of Maryland has hosted a statewide cybersecurity tabletop exercise. The exercise was hosted by the Maryland Department of Emergency Management (MDEM), in coordination with all cabinet-level agencies, and enabled critical partners to discuss plans, policies, and procedures in order to identify and address potential vulnerabilities or issues in preparation for a cybersecurity incident.
