Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson recently swore in John F. Kelly and Karen P. Tandy to the Homeland Security Advisory Council (HSAC).
“I welcome the new members to the advisory committee and hope they get to see the great work of our employees,” said Johnson. “And, I thank all the HSAC members for their continued service to the country and to the department.”
The HSAC is a Federal advisory committee to the DHS, and provides advice and recommendations to the secretary on matters related to homeland security. The committee is made up of leaders from state and local government, emergency and first responder communities, academia, and the private sector.
Kelly previously served as the Commander, U.S. Southern Command, from November 2012 to January 2016. He was responsible for all Department of Defense security cooperation in the 45 nations and territories of Central and South America and the Caribbean Sea, an area of 16 million square miles.
Tandy previously served as the administrator of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration from July 2003 to November 2007. She was also a former associate deputy attorney general for the Department of Justice, where she was responsible for developing national drug enforcement policy and strategies.
“As I look around this table, I really do have to marvel at the spectacular and diverse group of talent we have at this table of great Americans,” Johnson said. “We have a range of experience and background from former Members of Congress, former four-star members of the military, very distinguished prominent members of the private sector, and former DHS officials. I look at the people here, and have a lot of faith and confidence in the future direction of this committee.”
