The Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and Delaware Toll Operations are sounding the alarm on an ongoing text scam.

There has been a recent spike in Short Message Service (SMS) phishing scams referencing E-ZPass. In response, the DMV is warning its customers that it will never contact them via text or email to pay a violation or add funds to their E-ZPass Delaware Account. The recent SMS phishing scams are designed to trick receivers into paying a fake toll debt.

As part of its communications with customers, the DMV is urging everyone not to click on any links soliciting money for toll violations or account replenishment.

“Phishing scams are designed to create a sense of panic, catching the receiver off guard and causing them to react before thinking,” shared DMV Director Amy Anthony.

“I urge everyone to think before you click on links of any kind especially those requesting money, payment, personal information, credit card details, social security number, or anything else that could be used negatively,” continued Anthony.

The state is also encouraging anyone who receives a suspicious text or email to file a complaint with the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), ic3.gov.
