The city of Bloomington, Ind., has launched a new fiber map and is marking significant progress towards its goal of digital equity.

As part of its ongoing fiber project, the city has launched the Fiber Construction Progress Map. The map is the result of collaboration between the City Engineering Departments and Information and Technology Services GIS Division.

The interactive map provides:

  • A dashboard showing construction progress
  • Searchable addresses for real-time status updates
  • Planned expansion areas and project timelines

“This map would not have been possible without our Engineering Department staff members Kendall Knoke, Alexandra Gray, Kyle Baugh, and Dashiell Schonemann-Poppeliers,” said Meghan Blair, the City’s GIS Manager. “Their hard work, dedication, and expertise ensure that our residents have clear, accessible information about the status of fiber installation permits and construction.”

The new fiber map supports the broader fiber project, which has connected 20,300 units and has installed 186 miles of conduit. The project, which began in 2022, is 50 percent complete and is expected to be fully completed by November of this year.

As part of the city’s efforts to advance digital equity, Hoosier Fiber Networks and GigabitNow have begun providing affordable high-speed internet at the Bloomington Housing Authority’s Crestmont Apartments. The city said this milestone ensures that Crestmont residents have access to quality broadband service. The city anticipates the affordable high-speed internet will expand to additional Bloomington Housing Authority developments in the near future.

“The City is thrilled to see the Bloomington Housing Authority provision from our agreement with Meridiam come to life, bringing affordable high-speed fiber Internet service to residents of the Crestmont apartment community,” said Rick Dietz, Director of ITS at the City of Bloomington.
