Huntsville City Schools (HCS) – the school district that serves Huntsville, Ala. – is rolling out a new advanced weapon detection systems at all elementary schools across the district.

The new Opengate system will provide a seamless and efficient screening process as students enter school buildings each day.

The district said that installation of the new system marks the final phase of its comprehensive safety initiative. The district previously implemented Evolv weapon detection systems at high schools in early 2023, followed by Opengate installations in all middle and junior high schools in Fall 2024.

“These security enhancements reflect our commitment to providing a safe learning environment for students and staff,” said Dr. Clarence Sutton, HCS Superintendent. “We are proud that all of our schools are now equipped with advanced weapon detection technology, reinforcing our dedication to campus safety.”

HCS said the detection systems allow students to move quickly through entry points with minimal disruption to their school day. HCS noted that similar systems are commonly used at major sports arenas and entertainment venues and are able to provide an added layer of security while maintaining a welcoming environment. In addition to daily school entry, the systems may also be utilized at athletic events and extracurricular activities.

The new system was rolled out during the district’s spring break. Upon returning to school, staff members will work with students to ensure they are comfortable with the new process.
